Stamped concrete is one of the most requested upgrades among Ada County's new-build homeowners: a decorative surface over plain gray for at least part of the project. The finish options
- Stamped concrete: the surface is patterned (stone, brick, slate, and similar textures) and colored while still plastic, using stamp mats and a color hardener or release agent, then sealed. Most common on patios and walkways.
- Exposed aggregate: the surface mortar is washed or brushed away after the pour to reveal the decorative stone aggregate underneath. Durable and slip-resistant, sitting at a mid-premium price point between plain and stamped.
- Broom finish: the plain, textured, slip-resistant default. Not decorative, but the baseline every other finish is priced against.
- Troweled finish: smooth, typically reserved for interior or garage slabs rather than exterior decorative work.
What it costs over plain concrete

Durability in a freeze-thaw climate
A decorative finish doesn't change the structural requirements underneath it. The slab still needs to meet the same freeze-thaw specs that apply to any exposed Boise flatwork: a 4,000-psi mix with air entrainment (roughly 4.5โ7.5 percent) per ACI 318 ยง19.3, because an uncovered stamped patio or driveway sees the same roughly 108 freeze nights a year as a plain slab. Where stamped concrete is commonly restricted
One local wrinkle worth knowing before you commit to a stamped driveway: the portion of a driveway that crosses the public right-of-way (the apron, where it meets the street) is commonly governed separately from the rest of the driveway, and stamped or colored concrete is frequently prohibited in that right-of-way strip specifically. Base prep still matters
