If your existing patio is already damaged
Freeze-thaw damage on an existing patio shows up as surface scaling (thin flakes peeling away, exposing the aggregate), spalling at joints or edges, or a panel that's settled and dropped relative to its neighbors. The decision from there:
- Hairline cracks (under about 1/16 inch), slab otherwise sound: usually cosmetic; monitor.
- A settled but structurally sound panel: slabjacking or polyjacking can lift it back into place without a full tear-out.
- Surface scaling or spalling, worn decorative finish, slab structurally fine underneath: a bonded resurfacing overlay can renew the surface, though it will telegraph any movement or unsealed crack still present in the slab beneath it.
